RN Macedonia becomes a liaison country in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance

A decision to increase the status of the Republic of N Macedonia from observer country to liaison country was unanimously adopted at a plenary meeting of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IFRA) held in Luxembourg on December 2-5, 2019, as a transitional phase towards full membership. The Delegation of N Macedonia, led by Ambassador Jovan Tegovski, National Coordinator for IHRA, presented the application outlining the results and activities in the areas of Holocaust remembrance, education and research in Macedonia. The application was very positively evaluated by the IHRA member states and the efforts and activities carried out in these areas were highly commended. In the phase leading to full membership, in accordance with the IHRA rules, RN Macedonia designated the Republic of Greece and the Republic of Austria as mentoring states. At the plenary meetings, inter alia, a decision was taken to admit Portugal to full membership in IHRA and harmonize the text of the IHRA Ministerial Declaration on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Stockholm Declaration. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance is an intergovernmental organization that represents a platform where representatives of the governments of its member states, national and international experts exchange ideas and experiences regarding policies and specific activities in the area of Holocaust remembrance, education and research. The organization is playing an increasingly important international role and is a strong institutional mechanism in dealing with the increasing prevalence of anti-Semitism, denial and distortion of the Holocaust, hate speech, discrimination, xenophobia, racism, etc. IHRA has 34 member states, most of them EU member states, including USA, Israel, Canada, Argentina, Australia, etc. The raising the status of the Republic of N Macedonia in IFRA is valorizing the policies of the Government and its engagement in the area of Holocaust remembrance, education and research, fight against anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and other forms of human rights violations.
