PRIZE COMPETITION “I tell a photograph“


The Holocaust Fund of the Jews from the Republic of Macedonia hereby announces a competition for a short story inspired by old photographs: "I tell a photograph"

TOPIC: Every Friday, three photos will be published on the FB page of the Holocaust Fund that will be related to the life of the Jews in Macedonia. The three photos will be thematic and will also be the leitmotif for the story. The stories should be mainly about events from the life of the Jews in Macedonia in the past. Eligible will be those stories that can contribute to better understanding between people, reduce hatred and dispel prejudices, stories that deal with the past, the Holocaust, empathy, stories that push the boundaries and open opportunities for us to build a more certain, safer and a freer future for all. The aim is to encourage the production of the short story as a form of expression that is very popular, contemporary and widely accepted by the readers and has deep roots in the Sephardic storytelling tradition.

RULES: – the stories should not be longer than 100 lines (three pages written with journalistic spacing or up to 7,000 characters) – the authors can write in Macedonian, Turkish, Roma, Serbian, English or Albanian language – the stories have not been published before Right to participate have all adults who are affirmed but also those who have never published stories before. There is no limitation in terms of number of stories a participant can submit for the competition. DURATION: The competition starts on 16 October 2020 and will last until 31 December 2020. The results of the competition will be announced on 20 January 2021 and the prizes will be awarded to the winners on 27 January 2021, at the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

PRIZES: First prize – gift worth 25,000 denars Second prize – gift worth 15,000 denars Third prize – gift worth 5,000 denars The Fund reserves the right to announce the winners. The best stories, according to the jury, will be published on the FB profile of the Holocaust Fund and on its website. All solid stories will be printed in a publication.
