Commemoration event – the Day of Genocide of Roma in World War II


Second of August is the Day of Genocide of Roma in World War II. The Holocaust Memorial Center of the Jews from Macedonia hosted a commemoration event organized by the Minister without portfolio, Mr.Muzafer Bajram, the civil association “Romaverziatas” and the Roma Youth Center from Kumanovo. The participants were addressed by the Minister without portfolio, Mr.Muzafer Bajram; the member of the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr.Samka Ibraimoski; and Mr. Silhan Saitov, project manager of the civil association “Romaverzitas”. The participants watched the documentary movie that featured testimonies of Roma who survived the Auschwitz concentration camp. The talented student, Mr.Rufat Demirov, performed the “the Crime Perpetrator” monologue and at the end of the program a symbolic message was sent out from the plateau in front of the Holocaust Memorial Center of the Jews from Macedonia – “To remember and never to repeat again”. This 2nd of August – European day of the Genocide of Roma – is commemorated on the basis of the Resolution adopted by the European Parliament on 15 April 2015. A total of 2,897 Roma and Sinti were murdered in World War II in the so call gipsy concentration camp in Auschwitz – Birkenau in occupied Poland, while the estimates are that around half million Roma were killed in the concentration camps all over Europe.
