Commemoration of 27th of January –International Holocaust Remembrance Day


The International Holocaust Remembrance Day – 27th of January – was commemorated with a special session of the Macedonian Academy and Science and Arts (MANU) today in Skopje. The moment of silence was followed by address by the Prime Minister, Mr.Oliver Spasovski; the President of MANU, Ljupcho Kocarev; the President of the Macedonian Jewish Community Berta Romano-Nikolic and the Ambassadors of Sweden and Poland, Kirstin Forsgren Bengston and Voiczek Tuczinski. The session was followed by opening of exhibition of posters made b graphic design students on “Holocaust Remembrance – Never Again”. The exhibition was opened by the British Ambassador Rachel Galloway and awarded the best five works. The United Nations General Assembly in 2005 decided to pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust on 27th of January – the date when the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz ceased to operate. The UN Resolution proclaiming 27th of January as International Holocaust Day calls for respect and remembrance for the Holocaust victims and for development and implementation of educational programs so that such events never repeat again.
